If you are anything like me, you spend a significant portion of your day sitting behind your desk. It might be at work. Maybe you are in your home office. Perhaps you are a pastor of a church or a college professor. Many of us have a workspace that houses a computer and a phone (which would be your essentials) among a plethora of items that neither belong there or add any productivity to your work day whatsoever.
You can probably relate. One day you come to work and you think to yourself, “There used to be a desk here. Now there is just a pile of papers”. At some point, you began accumulating clutter. It’s not just your desk. You probably have closets full of stuff as well. There is probably no room for anything in your trunk and if you have a garage, there most likely is no room in it for your car.
Why do we do this?
Wouldn’t it just be easier to clean up as we go?
The majority of people have such a problem with clutter that we actually have a particular time of the year that we set aside to get rid of it all. (That happens to be right now, in case you aren’t sure.) Maybe we are just too busy to clean as we go. It’s easier to set stuff aside and come back to it later. Maybe your day just gets away from you and you don’t have time. Maybe there is a bit of laziness in us as well. We simply do not want to clean it up now if we can put it off for later.
I was walking out of the bank today and there was a truck parked facing the building. There was so much trash on the dashboard of the truck that I couldn’t actually see it (the dashboard, not the trash. The trash was definitely visible). I had to just assume that it was there. Now, the problem
Ultimately, the problem probably isn’t found in how lazy we are or when we are most motivated. If you really think about it, the problem is more along the lines of how much stuff we have. Doesn’t that sound about right? If we had less stuff, there wouldn’t be as much to clean.
So…. I started this post with the intentions of encouraging you to clean up your stuff. However, now that I think about it, why don’t you just take all that extra stuff and get rid of it?
PS: I think I’m gonna clean off my desk now.
