The Early Bird

You know, there’s that old saying, the early bird gets the worm, that people often use to express how productive it is to get up early and start your day before everyone else. It is not exactly that we want the worm necessarily but the lesson there is simple. Get up early, before everyone else, and reap the benefits of a full day’s work.

Now, I can relate with this. During the school year, I am up fairly early on a daily basis and I always feel incredibly productive, as long as I get right to it and don’t waste those early hours of my day. It is not out of the ordinary for me to get all of my day’s work nailed down by lunch time. How great is that feeling? You have your entire afternoon to work on projects or relax as opposed to working on those things that are required of you.

Yesterday, I was reading this article by Caroline Praderio at Business Insider in regards to this very thing. She provides us with seven benefits, that are backed by science, to waking up early. I will list them here but I definitely encourage you to click on the link and check out her entire article. Lot’s of good stuff here. And, of course, it’s backed by science so there’s that as well.

You might weigh less

And you might be better at keeping weight off

You might sleep better

You might have better mental health

You might lower your risk for diabetes and metabolic syndrome

You might excel at work

After looking over this list, it seems like a no-brainer. Why not get up a little earlier in the morning and get your day (plus your health) off on the right foot. That could be the one little change to your routine that will make the difference for you. However, maybe this is an area of struggle for you. Maybe you have a hard time getting up in the morning. Try this. For this week, just set your alarm for fifteen minutes earlier than usual. It’s not a huge change, just a small one. Of course, you have to leave the snooze button alone. Then, next week, set it for fifteen minutes earlier than that. Make gradual adjustments until you are at the place you want to be.
