Around this time three years ago, my wife and I got the opportunity to take our kids on a trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. At the time, we were working for Patrick Henry Family Services as house parents at one of the residential cottages. During the two years that we lived in Virginia, we were given the opportunity to vacation at the ocean on four different occasions. The agency we worked for sent us on a trip to Kill Devil Hills, NC one year and Myrtle Beach the next. We also got the chance to go to Virginia Beach and Sandbridge Beach on a couple of our long stretches off. Man, I love the ocean. Now, I know, curiosity killed the cat. However, I think that having a spirit of curiosity is healthy. How boring does life get when we stop discovering new places. One time, a friend was telling me about this vacation place that his family always goes to over Memorial Day weekend. They have been going there for something like 25 or 30 years without change. I just listened but in my mind, I was thinking, “How dull. There is so much in the world beyond that.” Continue reading “What makes you curious?”
In the line of work that we do, it is easy to let my children just sit in front of the television all day long. However, Elisa and I know that as easy as it is to let them be entertained that way for hours, it is not good for them to be so sedentary. They have to have activity outside of the house. Heck, maybe we could go outside with them. They need to have something engaging their brain (the tv does accomplish this to a point).
Elisa is a little more deliberate about getting them away from the television than I am but we are both adamant that our children not grow up in front of the tube.
